IN THE BEGINNING

In 1995 library board member, Margaret Watson approached her close friend Avril Sexton to explain the serious funding situation that was facing the library, due to government cuts to their budget. She asked Avril if she would be interested in starting a "Friends of the Library" whose mandate would be to support the library by raising funds and advocating for support from other sources. Margaret chose wisely, because Avril had a lot of experience fund raising for various groups and was a very frequent user of the library. A few days later, Avril & Brian met with the librarian Susan Smith and Margaret to gather as much information as they could find about starting a 'Friends' group. A week later, after phoning a few people, Avril called a meeting. At that meeting, Betty Tennant, Margaret Hiashi, Jan Mason, Margaret Watson and Avril & Brian became the founding members of The Friends of the Madoc Library. Graham Reid was elected President, June became Treasurer and Brian offered to be secretary. Avril was elected P.R. and fund raising chair.
